“I started flying line control model airplanes with my father and two brothers in the early 1980’s. At that time, it was a hobby for all of us to enjoy together. We built our planes together, designed planes together, flew planes together, and grew closer as a family because of our love and passion for model aviation. I had always wanted to try remote-controlled (RC) model airplanes but it was too cost-prohibitive at the time. Even after we have all grown up and started our own families, we still cherish those childhood memories. I got out of the hobby in 1989 when I enlisted in the United States Air Force and left home for the first time.
Fast-forward about 25 years. In 2013 my son, who has always been interested in airplanes and flying, introduced me to a YouTube channel called FliteTest. After watching a few videos, I was convinced that we could finally break into this hobby that had eluded me for so long. My son and I got to have experiences very much like I remember having with my father and brothers all those years ago. We have been building, flying, designing, and bonding through model aviation ever since. My son has since gone on to pursue a career in commercial aviation. He is currently a junior at the University of North Dakota double-majoring in commercial aviation and unmanned aerial systems. Model aviation has had a major impact on his love and passion for aviation. I would hate to see anyone miss out on these types of opportunities to explore and discover their passions by unfair and costly restrictions on this hobby that we have been safely enjoying for many years.
I addition to enjoying the RC model aviation hobby with my son, I have also introduced this amazing hobby to my brothers, my nephews, my brother-in-law, and even my dad. This hobby is a great way for families to spend time together. I have also connected and become good friends with many people from the USA and all over the world that I would likely never had met had it now been for model aviation. I would like to see that continue for generations to come. Model aviation has had a very positive impact on my life over the years.”
