“I wanted to fly RC airplanes since I was a young boy. It wasn’t until 10 years ago that I finally was able to break into the hobby with inexpensive electric airplanes. The ability to go to my local school field and fly on the weekends sparked something in me that has now grown into a huge part of my life. I now go to a local club and fly all kinds of aircraft and often help act as an instructor and ambassador to encourage new people to join the hobby (in all forms). I’m very concerned over these new rules and how they could squash the opportunity to get new people to enjoy and experience this hobby. If the proposed rules existing back when I first started, I doubt I would have ever gotten so involved with the RC hobby. Being able to fly at a local park or school with a small aircraft while observing obvious safety rules should be more than enough to keep people safe. The “risk” RC aircraft pose to the greater population is extremely minimal and has been blown WAY out of proportion to the actual issue at hand. I believe rules and efforts need to be made to get in front of this, but the current rules being proposed are down-right draconian.”
