“I’m 66 and feeling it. I’ve had many hobbies over the years-fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, boating-but most of these are discontinued due to my health and age. But I have a life long love of aviation and in fact am an FAA Private Pilot, though currently inactive. Airplane modeling has become my main preoccupation. Buying them, assembling them, showing and flying them, and most important of all, I go to many AMA certified aviation events every season to meet and talk with friends. It gets me out of the house, something I am finding more difficult at this time of my life. My main concern is the draconian regulating that the FAA has proposed will ruin the pursuit of my hobby. It has already caused me great personal harm in my life and relationships. It is giving me personal angst over the possibility that the FAA may well turn me into a felon for the simple act of flying a model plane-an act that over the years has proved to be one of the safest hobbies on the planet, and no amount of bureaucratic song and dance over “SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY” will change that. As for ideas, first of all-DO NO HARM! The regulations as proposed will do great harm to an industry and a hobby for no good reason. Go ahead and regulate commercial operations. The very fact that they are commercial begs regulation. But please, please, leave the recreational hobbyist out of it.”
