“I’ve been in the hobby for over 40 years on and off and now apply these skills in my work developing tools for collaborative robotics to improve agricultural efficiency. I own 27 hobby scale aircraft including fixed wing and multirotors all are flown within VLS and the cost of individual registration and data plans would be prohibitive resulting in loss my ability to pursue happiness through the hobby. In my work I am a rUAS part 107 PIC and have an advance understanding of the issues. In my experience the vast majority of folks in the hobby operate in a very safe fashion and pose such a low risk to safety that they could be considered no risk. I am concerned that the FRIA specifications within the current rule are designed to phase out fixed flying sites as these represent the safest venue for flying. I am also concerned that the rules related to home built craft provides for no path to compliance particularly if fixed flying sites are phased out. I find that advanced building and flying aircraft from kits or from scratch is the most challenging, satisfying and enjoyable part of the hobby. The idea that older aircraft will no longer be flown is falacious some of the plane I own have been passed from one generation to the next and are still very airworthy and will likely be for generations to come with proper care, upgrades, and maintenance.”
