“I have been involved in building and flying model aircraft for 40 years. I still fly multiple balsa planes that I built in the 1980s as a teenager. I also have a DJI drone; and nearly everyting in-between. Building planes (and flying them) with my Dad when I was young were some of the best memories of my life. Building models (of all kinds) over my life has taught me so many things, and given me so many memories (espically with my Dad). It is very sad and frustriating to see these proposed rules, that are essentially based on the premise that model airplanes (and especially camera drones) are weapons, and thus need to be regulated, even more strictly than guns. I think the rulemakers have no idea the what the core of this hobby is all about. We all understand that it has been the advent of DJI-type drones in the last 10 years, that has created the preception that model aviation is all about nefarious uses and potential dangers. In some ways I can almost support some limitations on drones; like geofencing of large airports. However, any technologic “fix” that is anywhere close to what is proposed seems like it would be a slippey slope…eventually leading to the rules that are currently proposed. I believe in punishing the people that actually break the rules and actually do something stupid with a drone. But punishing the 99% of the the rest of hobbiests via these “rules” is not the way to go.”
