“My father and several uncles introduced me to aviation at a very early age. I have been an avid participant and/or spectator since. Eventually, I became a pilot and flew corporate aircraft for a local manufacturing firm. Along the way, I participated in several voluntary operations such as Mercy Med Flight, intro flights, etc. Within most of that time, I built and flew model aircraft as a sparetime hobby. In one case, I introduced a young man in my neighborhood to the model hobby world. That experience eventually inspired him to pursue an education in aerodynamics (engineering degree) at prestigious university. During his time in college, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and became a C-130 transport pilot. Following his graduation, he started at a major aircraft manufacturing company supplying, among other things, aircraft to civilian and military entities. Over the years, we both have enjoyed many hours of pure enjoyment discussing and engaging in anything aviation. I am currently 73. I have been involved in this model aviation hobby now for over 50 years. I have also been a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics for many of those years. I have watched this hobby go through many iterations of technical and innovative progress. I sincerely ask the FAA to spend more time to listen, learn and discover how different our hobby is compared to the commercial side of the current use of technology. Mixing and combining our hobby with the likes of Amazon, and others hoping to gain total control of all airspace at or below 400 feet is a very unfair and gross overreach. Additionally, manufacturers, distributors and retail business will surely wilt on the vine in very short order if this rule goes through as currently written. In conclusion and in my opinion, this proposed rule is a threatening move by the FAA that will literally destroy not only the model aviation hobby, but nothing more than an inspiration killer in and for future aviation, no matter what aspect involved. Therefore, I, along with many others are in hopes of a reasonable rule that clearly separates our model aviation hobby away from this proposed rule.”
