“Flying radio control models is something I’ve done since I was 15 (1983) and it was part of what contributed to my Mechanical Engineering degree and my pilot career with a major airline. Along the way I’ve shared the hobby whenever possible and as a club President I continue to encourage others to try flying radio control models. The restrictions being considered will make it next to impossible to recruit new members as there will be so many restrictions that just trying the hobby will be cost prohibitive and likely not worth the trouble. Students that have access to RC based curriculum will be out of luck. Kids that are drawn to aviation will be out of luck. From where I’m sitting, all of this drama seems driven by future airways needs for commercial SUAS operators. Our clubs and the models we fly will be in the way. Regulate FPV and eliminate beyond-line-of-sight flying if you have to but don’t let the new regulatory environment kills hobby grade RC flying clubs and the people that enjoy flying by the rules on sunny days, within line-of-sight, often with aircraft we’ve built ourselves.”
